In 2016, a woman from Long Island was able to recover $5,000 in cash she accidentally threw away, thanks to the persistence of several sanitation workers.
Krishna Nadalall, a sanitation worker, received a call from his mother, Bayban, who realized she had mistakenly thrown away the envelope containing money she had saved for her mortgage. Concerned, Nadalall enlisted the help of three coworkers to search through the trash at the Merrick Transfer Station.
Together, they sifted through tons of garbage and successfully recovered all but $40 of the money, as some bills had fallen out along the way. Although Bayban offered them a reward for their efforts, the workers declined.
The workers’ actions gained attention for their honesty and dedication, as they spent hours working to help the woman, yet chose to refuse any compensation.
