The Bajau people live on the sea, rarely visit land and survived by spearfishing without using scuba gear or oxygen tanks

The Bajau people, also called “sea nomads,” have a special way of life closely tied to the ocean.

They often live in stilt houses above the water or on small boats, spending most of their time at sea.

While they do visit land occasionally for trading or community gatherings, they don’t have permanent homes, and their nomadic lifestyle means many lack official citizenship.

This leaves them without access to basic services like healthcare or education. Instead of using money, the Bajau rely on bartering to meet their needs.

They are famous for their incredible freediving skills, diving deep underwater without SCUBA gear to spearfish and gather food, showcasing their extraordinary connection to the ocean.
