Hajime White got a call from her father on Wednesday morning. He told her about the fire and that they needed to evacuate, but then he said, “I have to go, the fire’s in the yard.” Her father, 67-year-old Mitchell, was retired, an amputee, and used a wheelchair.

He lived in Altadena with his son, Justin, who had cerebral palsy. Another son, Jordan, also lived with them but was in the hospital at the time. A few hours later, Hajime received the sad news that they didn’t make it out. Her father had been waiting for an ambulance, but it never arrived. Authorities found Mitchell next to his son’s bed, and the family believes he was trying to save Justin.

Hajime said her father would never have left his son behind. He was a loving man, known as “FaFa” by his family, who had a special nickname for each of his great-grandchildren.
Justin, Hajime’s half-brother, had trouble with his disability but could communicate through a computer. Hajime is now waiting to hear from other family members in Los Angeles to arrange the funeral. She said it’s very hard and feels like everything has suddenly fallen apart.
